The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation.
It is an association of Members from diverse backgrounds including the timber trade and forestry profession, manufacturers, and community forestry groups from around the world.
TIMBERWeb has agreed a strategic partnership with FSC to neutrally promote FSC-approved TIMBERWeb Members. These particular Members are companies trading in FSC certified timber and wood products.
Membership is open to all who share its aims and objectives. The FSC provides an umbrella organisation and structure within which qualified independent certifiers can operate according to clear guidelines and using agreed standards covering social, environmental and economic aspects of effective forest management.
Forest certification guarantees that long-term responsible management is in place, safeguarding the social and environmental benefits of a forest within an economically viable operation.
Chain of custody inspection ensures that only genuinely certified timber and wood products carry the FSC mark of approval. Only products which are certified are legally authorised to carry the FSC trademark.
FSC Certifiers
The FSC uses independent certifiers and verifiers to check businesses applying for FSC certification on its behalf. These are:
Institut für Marktökologie (IMO)
Scientific Certification Systems
Silva Forest Foundation
Skal International
BM TRADA
SmartWood/Rainforest Alliance
Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS)
Soil Association
ICILA (Instituto per la Certificazione ed i servizi per Imprese dell'Arredamento e del Legno)
GFA Terra Systems
South African Bureau for Standards (SABS)

The FSC was formed in 1993 and it is funded by charitable foundations, by government donors, by membership subscriptions and by accreditation fees.
To ensure its independence FSC's head office, in Mexico, does not accept funding from industry.
