Several programmes verify companies selling certified timber and wood products. With our guide, buyers and sellers can receive greater assurance their trading encourages good forest stewardship.


  What is timber certification ?

Timber certification systems enable participating harvesting, sawmilling and manufacturing companies to highlight that they are committed in some way to good forestry stewardship.

Certifying organisations independently assess these companies for adherance to a particular certification system. Several systems exist globally.

The Forest Stewardship Council is one of the leading certification systems, although several other programmes share the common goal of achieving a greater degree of sustainability in forest management.

These programmes differ in the standards used, the verification procedures undertaken, and the geographic region they specialise in.

Accredited certifiers decide if a company complies to a certification system, although each system has different attributes. Once a certifier has given approval, a company can opt to display a certification system logo on its products.
